'The Great Water Crystal'

The children were all ears for Dragons Are Too Seldom Puppet Theater production. Puppeteer, Markie Scholz, wrote the script, created puppets and was a one woman (multiple puppet) show that entertained the audience.

“The Great Water Crystal” is the story of  Bob Bobcat and Millie Rabbit, two reluctant heroes.  They have been selected out of all the animals to return the Great Water Crystal to their beautiful valley before it becomes a desert. The Great Water Crystal is the source of all the water in the valley, the rain, the streams even the morning dew.

Trouble is, Pirate PeeWee Fox and his Terrible Assistant Flynn the Fast-footed Ferret have stolen the Water Crystal and taken it to the Seven Seas.

Millie and Bob must learn to work together to bring the water crystal back to the valley if it is ever going to rain again.

The Great Owl, Clyde the Crab, Noreen the Sea Gnome and, of course, Zed the Dragon all help our heroes to bring rain and the water crystal back home.

~Each individual’s strength helps achieve the goal.

'Hero at Home' was written by Sarah Verardo who is a caregiver to her husband, Michael, one of the most severely wounded Veterans from the Global War on Terror. While serving as an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan, he sustained catastrophic and life changing injuries in 2010. His long road home has included more that 100 surgeries and years of speech, visual, physical, and occupational therapies.

Sarah has dedicated her life to the care and recovery of her husband, and to Veterans and Caregivers nationwide.

Had a great First Saturday Brunch with 40 attendees (or maximum right now). Rea Weyrich, head librarian at the Whitewood Library, came to speak and show artifacts from an excavation of Crook City, the town that was once up the road from Whitewood. Lots of great conversations as people passed artifacts around. Great food, too! Thank you to our cooks and especially to Rea for the engaging morning!

Yoga @ Library every Tuesday

Information Access just got BETTER!

On December 4, the South Dakota State Library made it easier for residents to access the 54 Library-provided electronic resources from home or anywhere outside of a library or school building.

We are excited here at the Whitewood Public Library to be a part of providing this extended service to our patrons. 

With the new system, GeoIP, if the user is physically located within the State of South Dakota, all citizens have to do is "click and go,” to access the eresources. This is much faster and simpler than the previous system which required entering a library card and password. (Of Note: The SDSL ecard/barcode method will remain as a backup). For most residents, GeoIP will be invisible, making the process much simpler.

GeoIP will improve access for most South Dakota residents to these vetted, authoritative, and commercial-free electronic resources. These resources are excellent for doing school research, preparing for a career test, ACT test prep, accessing early literacy e-books or popular magazines, researching ancestors, and many other educational uses. If a citizen has additional questions, please contact a local librarian or the state library.https://library.sd.gov/LIB/ERD/access/complete.aspx

Daria Bossman, State Librarian, stated, “We are thrilled to bring South Dakota citizens this new technology. It is important to note that our school, academic and public libraries are still ‘hard-wired’ for reliable access, but GeoIP authentication allows the convenience of accessing news and vetted information without have to go inside a library building.”

The State Library’s electronic resources are provided for free to all South Dakota residents through a combination of funding from the South Dakota State Library/Department of Education and federal funding through the Library and Technology Act/ Institute of Museum and Library Services.

We are researching the history of Whitewood Elementary School trophies. They will be on display in our historical case til Thanksgiving. Please consider ‘adopting’ a trophy by helping to provide a back story and supporting pictures to tell a complete history.

Our historical case is back to its beginnings. Dan Schmidt/Ridley Block donated their trophy case to Whitewood Public Library several years ago. Thank you. We have showcased many items. Come see us in December for Jean Sneesby’s Christmas village depicting ‘Whitewood the Early Years’

Sewing 101

 Sewing their own bags.  Thank You Patty Karas and granddaughter Morgan for showing us how to use a sewing machine.   Each child selected a piece of material, stitched up the seams then laced a ribbon through.    Grace Hill, had coordinated with Mrs Karas to come during Tuesday Craft Club with Grace.    They agreed to do this again next Tuesday.

Donna Willson has left the building.
A lot has happened since Donna started at the library in 1998.  One DOS based computer and a card catalog system.  Now we have been automated using a computerized program with seven computers in the building.  Donna did all the cataloging for every book that came in the door.  She will be on hand down the road to fill in ... Jim Willson,  Clayton Overland,  and Howard Peterson

talked the 4rth graders about the 'Ridin' and 'Ropin Clubs that they were a part of over 50 years ago. Mr Peterson gave the kids a lesson in calf ropin'.

This was all part of the 4rth Grade South Dakota History project.  Mr Jones has put a focus on Whitewood's history by assigning his students with people to interview and buildings to research.  We here at the library were glad to be a part of that.
