A Homesteader Arbor Day

Thanks to Mr Jones' and his 4th Grade class, Whitewood celebrated 2019 Arbor Day with a homestead feeling.

-In the early Years, Whitewood was known as the 'Breadbasket" for the area because of the many fruit tres and vegetable gardens run by Whitewood residents.   One resource writes Whitewood is the "the best fruit region of the State."   - excerpt from Whitewood Historical Notes and Folklore by Mary Livingston.

"Cowboys" Visit the Library

Whitewood 'Cowboys'

Jim Willson,  Clayton Overland,  and Howard Peterson

talked the 4rth graders about the 'Ridin' and 'Ropin Clubs that they were a part of over 50 years ago. Mr Peterson gave the kids a lesson in calf ropin'.

This was all part of the 4rth Grade South Dakota History project.  Mr Jones has put a focus on Whitewood's history by assigning his students with people to interview and buildings to research.  We here at the library were glad to be a part of that.
