Dragons Are Too Seldom Puppet Theater

 

'The Great Water Crystal'

The children were all ears for Dragons Are Too Seldom Puppet Theater production. Puppeteer, Markie Scholz, wrote the script, created puppets and was a one woman (multiple puppet) show that entertained the audience.

“The Great Water Crystal” is the story of  Bob Bobcat and Millie Rabbit, two reluctant heroes.  They have been selected out of all the animals to return the Great Water Crystal to their beautiful valley before it becomes a desert. The Great Water Crystal is the source of all the water in the valley, the rain, the streams even the morning dew.

Trouble is, Pirate PeeWee Fox and his Terrible Assistant Flynn the Fast-footed Ferret have stolen the Water Crystal and taken it to the Seven Seas.

Millie and Bob must learn to work together to bring the water crystal back to the valley if it is ever going to rain again.

The Great Owl, Clyde the Crab, Noreen the Sea Gnome and, of course, Zed the Dragon all help our heroes to bring rain and the water crystal back home.

~Each individual’s strength helps achieve the goal.

The Butte/Lawrence County 4-H Public Speaking

Butte/Lawrence County 4-H Public Speaking contest was held this May at the Whitewood Public Library.

The 4-H public speaking program is one of the premier offerings that 4-H members participate in. Through the speaking program they develop communication skills that they use for the rest of their lives. Many former speakers have looked back fondly on their memories and opportunities that they had through 4-H.

      

The 4-H Cloverbud Program offers a wide variety of activities and experiences, in a non-competitive environment, encourages children to explore and think about the world around them.

4-H Cloverbuds program, specifically is designed for younger children. Exploring, asking questions, and an eagerness to learn is what makes the Cloverbud age such an exciting time!

'Hero at Home' Book Donation

'Hero at Home' was written by Sarah Verardo who is a caregiver to her husband, Michael, one of the most severely wounded Veterans from the Global War on Terror. While serving as an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan, he sustained catastrophic and life changing injuries in 2010. His long road home has included more that 100 surgeries and years of speech, visual, physical, and occupational therapies.

Sarah has dedicated her life to the care and recovery of her husband, and to Veterans and Caregivers nationwide.

Winter Preparedness with South Dakota Emergency Management Office

 Winter Preparedness training at the Whitewood Public Library. On this sunny March day no one was thinking about a winter storm. What do we say in South Dakota? Wait a minute if for the weather to change. Being prepared is key weather winter, tornadoes, floods or fires. A team from the South Dakota Emergency Management Office drove out from Pierre to conduct training for 53 children and 10 adults.

James Horn, a ‘Living History’ Speaker

 The Whitewood Public Library Director, Rea Weyrich, partnered with Whitewood Elementary School 4th Grade teacher, Mike Jones, to host presenter, James Hunt, who gives an informative and entertaining talk.And have a display celebrating traditions that have been handed down through generations.

Mr Horn spoke of his heritage while describing his clothing and other artifacts he brought with him.  As a former history interpreter for the National Park Service, his presentations focus towards hands on educational approach,  He encouraged the children to feel the soft brain-tanned hide, to touch the thousands of beads,  

programs to travelers from around the world curious about early American Indian civilization. 

Every child was still and all ears as he spoke of American Indian civilization.

In anticipation of this presentation, library volunteers created a display featuring the traditional  Sioux Indian fall buffalo hunt and how the tradition continues with the south Dakota Game, Fish, And Parks Annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State parks.  Both of the people - the Sioux used all parts of the buffalo to survive the winter, the parks people use the roundup to help fund the maintenance of Custer State Park.

The Director added to the display featuring modern Sioux artists who are producing traditional art pieces, such as a drum made from elk skin, dolls made from buffalo skins, carvings from cottonwood trees.  Books both non-fiction and fiction on the bottom shelves provide the patrons with more extensive knowledge on our fellow Sioux culture.

This presentation and display allowed both the teacher and the library Director the opportunity to reinforce vocabulary words that were first introduced in the classroom.  Another positive aspect was the use of these vocabulary words in context - giving the students a connection between words and physical items- stimulates word memory.

This year’s Friend of the Library Recipient is an organization that shows commitment to libraries across the Northern Black Hills. Their support comes in the forms of volunteering, special projects, partnerships, annual displays, and readiness to help promote libraries. Displays shared include information about Constitution Day, as well as displays promoting women’s health and so much more. The nationwide mission of this group is literacy, so partnering with libraries is a natural position.

This organization goes above and beyond to help build community and library partnerships and make community projects a huge success. This organization has been happy to help libraries in various ways since its inception in 2013 and continues to build bonds throughout the Northern Hills.

We Remember -- 911

We had lots of helpers to add to our display. The children had learned quite a bit in school about the events of that day.

Tobacco Flannel Display

 Tobacco Flannels were wrapped around tobacco pouches around 1906 - 1916.  Thank you Lee Grimes for sharing your unique collection.  

The practice of inserting advertising in tobacco products and packaging began about 1870 and was common throughout the late 19th Century and the first decades of the 20th Century. The inserts or premiums were varied, some more functional than others, but altogether interesting, and therefore they became collectible items to thousands of men, women and children. Tin tobacco tags, cigarette cards, cigar ribbons, cigarette silks, and tobacco flannels, are a small portion of the collectibles classified as Tobacciana. These items are not as well known nor collected, as other tobacco related items like cigar boxes or tins, cigarette cases and lighters.
 

Whitewood Public Library Director, Rea Weyrich, talks about Memorial Day while highlighting our Military Display at the Whitewood Public Library. We were able to talk to the whole Whitewood Elementary student body today. DAR representative, Mary Livingston, set up this event.

Memorial Display at the Library

The Whitewood Public Library wants to remind people the true meaning of Memorial Day. So, the director and volunteer, Lee Grimes, have turned a display case into a temporary museum. 

The director of the library, Rea Weyrich, had put out a call for interesting collections to be temporarily showcased in the three display options the library has. Grimes stepped forward with some outstanding and well-rounded collections of uniforms that include complete stories to back them up.  One story includes a picture of three female fighter pilots who assisted a U.S. fighter pilot in getting refueled with 5 gallon fuel cans.

 “I want our patrons to feel gratitude for the military soldiers who have filled these uniforms and the great sacrifice that they and their families have made through the years, and just celebrate their lives,” Weyrich added. 

A military canteen that was unearthed by, Steve Ellis, using a metal detector, near where Crook City existed is also on display.

There is also an awareness to the display. Visitors are asked to contribute to the Whitewood Historical Binders by filling out a form and providing a picture of a local soldier.  Currently our first submission is 99 year old, Bud Shaykett, who served and was injured in WWII.  We have added a section in the display to Shaykett as well.

This was our best Bake Sale EVER! With over $600. Which included a surprise $100 envelope and a ‘jolly’ gal who donated $70. WOW!

Thanks to all the volunteers and to the Easter Bunny too.

Had a great First Saturday Brunch with 40 attendees (or maximum right now). Rea Weyrich, head librarian at the Whitewood Library, came to speak and show artifacts from an excavation of Crook City, the town that was once up the road from Whitewood. Lots of great conversations as people passed artifacts around. Great food, too! Thank you to our cooks and especially to Rea for the engaging morning!
